Why is Oxfam supporting Black Gold?
Black Gold is an extraordinary film which contrasts the enormous power and wealth of the mighty multinational coffee companies with the plight of coffee farmers as they strive for a better life. The film follows Tadesse Meskela of the Oromia Coffee Farmers' Co-operative Union in Ethiopia on a one man mission to save his 74,000 struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy. As these farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality coffee beans on the international market, Tadesse travels the world in an attempt to find buyers willing to pay a fair price.

Black Gold, made by British filmmakers Nick and Marc Francis, exposes how millions of coffee farmers and producers of other commodities are struggling to survive in the global market. It shows the hectic dealings at the World Trade Organisation talks in Cancun in 2003 and the frustration of African Ministers as their calls for fairer international trade rules are ignored by rich western countries. By presenting a compelling case for ending the double standards and rigged rules governing international trade the film strikes at the heart of Oxfam’s campaign to Make Trade Fair.

Since 2001 Oxfam has worked with coffee farmers in Ethiopia and elsewhere to help secure a fairer deal for small scale producers. By getting a fairer share of the rich coffee profits, millions of coffee farmers would be lifted out of poverty and be able to afford food, schooling and better health care for their families.

So please pledge to see the film at www.blackgoldmovie.com

If thousands of people pledge to see Black Gold, cinemas around the world will feel the demand for the film and will want to show it, so please ask your friends and family to sign up as well.
