Global Week of Action
Ottawa, April 11th
Oxfam
volunteers held a mock funeral for rice farmers in front of Canada's Parliament
April 11 to protest rich-country pressure for lower tariffs on crops grown
by poor farmers. The action followed a news conference at which Oxfam
Canada called on the Canadian government to give development as much priority
as exports in trade negotiations and to refrain from prizing open the
markets of poor countries. The mock funeral was the first in a week of
events across Canada from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, B.C. to
build public pressure on the Canadian government.
